Overview
Prefabrication in MEP systems is the application of assembling components of the building services in off-site and then transporting these assemblies to the relevant construction site. Such assemblies are known as prefabricated MEP modules and panels that are applied to the buildings to depict standard sizes of MEP Components within structures. It has transformed the conventional method of manufacturing on-site and carries it out on-site. Prefabrication of MEP components is evolving the construction industries.
Prefabrication in the MEP model can bring out numerous advantages such as the reduction in material handling, wastage at the time of construction process, effect of project delivery on site and schedule. It results in a controlled working environment that aids in an increase in work quality and ensures safety at the time of construction. MEP systems construction is a multi-level process. MEP modules can be manufactured, inspected, assembled and tested off-site while making MEP Engineers working together at the same time to complete their installations. This boosts coordination among the traders to accomplish work faster and finish installations.
Modular construction is advancement in prefabrication where components are assembled off-site and installed on-site. It consists of MEP modules that are coordinated and effective solutions are determined for the installation of MEP BIM Services.
Types and Examples of MEP Prefabrication
1.) Prefabricated Components: - Prefabricated components in the MEP system includes of Flexible water pipes, Pre-Insulated air-conditioning ducts, Plugs and flexible nozzle droppers.
2.) Prefabricated Modules: - Horizontal ceiling assemblies with cable trays, conduits, trunking, etc. Vertical riser modules with cable trays, etc. along with pumps and compressor modules.
3.) Prefabricated Sub-assemblies with Architectural/Structural Components: - MEP assemblies attached to a pathway, riser module with platforms and prefabricated horizontal modules with ceiling boards.
4.) Fully integrated assemblies:- Prefabricated MEP module are fully pre-assembled with control panels for piping interconnection, cable’s stoppage for power supply and associates for building automation systems and fire protection. The pre-assembled equipment includes Vacuum pump sets, cooling towers, chillers and chilled water and condensing water pumps.

Benefits of MEP Prefabrication
MEP modules have the power to transform the building construction in terms of assembling the modules off-site can lead to faster completion of a project and waiting time for approval is also less.
The cost incurred here is in terms of coordination process or purchase of lifting equipment since the quantity of work is less and completion of work is faster so ensuring cost savings is attained.
Reduction in labor as scaffolding is less and it leads to greater worker safety. Prefabricated MEP modules can be installed easily and effectively. Pollution is eliminated due to components being assembled with off-site prefabrication. As components are manufactured in a controlled environment, so quality is controlled.
Conclusion
By using BIM technology, on-site installations can be stimulated with access that can be identified. Prefabrication in MEP system is transforming the construction industry as improved safety, quality, scheduling and costs. Quality is a major factor for projects, but with prefabrication of components in a factory, quality control is attained at a high level.
